The domain of the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems specialization stems from the nature of the region, where the manufacturing industry has a decisive share in the regional economy. Therefore, the domain aims to support the development of capacities and collaboration in research, development, and innovation in the region, in order to exploit trends related to Industry 4.0 or 5.0 in the region’s core sectors, especially in manufacturing companies.
The region has a long-standing tradition of higher education and research in this area. Therefore, through activities in research, development, and innovation, it is possible to facilitate the restructuring of production, higher labour productivity, and thereby global competitiveness. Among other things, the aim is to use R&D&I capacities to develop more economical, greener, more energy-efficient manufacturing processes, and new production models, in line with the trend towards reducing the consumption of primary resources, and decreasing energy and material dependence.
