The city of Pilsen and the entire Pilsen Region confirm their position as one of the most innovative regions in Czechia. Thanks to technological developments in the field of intelligent mobility, autonomous systems, and unmanned technologies, the city is becoming an inspiring example of how modern technologies can improve the lives of residents, enhance security, and create innovative ecosystems for businesses, academia, and the public.
Plzeň serves as a laboratory for smart city solutions that can inspire other Czech cities. From intelligent transport and autonomous drones to smart technologies used by the city police. And these are not just concepts, but real tools for improving urban life and regional security.
Smart intersections: safer and more efficient mobility
Pilsen is investing heavily in smart transportation, especially in so-called smart intersections. In the Bory housing estate, the city has expanded its traffic polygon with new detectors, sensors, and cameras that can dynamically control traffic, minimize risks, and increase the safety of road users. Another key element is the updated software, the so-called central element – a platform that connects information from intersections, vehicles, and the national transport system. This creates the basis for the possible future expansion of smart technologies to other locations in the city and for testing autonomous mobility. There is also an example of a smaller innovation focused directly on real human behavior. Smart LED strips embedded in the road warn pedestrians of an approaching tram.
SIT Drones: Innovation that saves lives and represents the region
Another technological gem of Pilsen is SIT Drones – a professional unit of drone pilots under the Information Technology Administration of the City of Pilsen, which is increasingly involved in interventions together with the Integrated Rescue System (IZS). In 2025, SIT DRONES broke the record for the number of interventions. They went into action 140 times together with the IZS! Drones help in the search for missing persons, monitor traffic accidents, and assist in fires and other crisis situations. Their use thus demonstrates how autonomous technologies can contribute directly to the safety of residents and the effectiveness of rescue operations. The SIT Drones team also successfully represents Pilsen at international events. Last year, it presented itself on platforms that bring together the best innovative urban solutions from around the world — at EXPO in Osaka, Japan, and at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona.
Jalud Embedded: enhanced security thanks to cutting-edge development straight from Pilsen
The city of Pilsen also actively uses innovative technologies to enhance the security of public spaces. The city’s technological ecosystem includes solutions from Jalud Embedded, a leading developer of embedded systems and software for demanding industrial applications. The Pilsen-based company is involved in projects in the automotive, aviation, industrial automation, and safety-critical systems sectors. Pilsen was one of the first cities in the world to implement their Sound Event Detector (SED) technology, a system of smart sound detectors used by the Pilsen Municipal Police. The sensors have proven themselves in assisting with interventions and saving lives, and their contribution has been confirmed by the award the project received in the AI Awards competition in the Public Administration category.
