Since its founding in 1945, the Pilsen Faculty of Medicine has been developing scientific research in parallel with teaching. Its researchers have managed to reach the European top in many fields and achieve many priority discoveries.

The faculty systematically supports its research teams and has taken the bold step of building a modern, research-focused Biomedical Center on its new campus. Since 2014, most of the research activities of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen have been concentrated there.

The center focuses primarily on infectious diseases (sepsis, antibiotic resistance of bacteria, prophylaxis of viral infections in transplantology), oncological issues in connection with experimental surgery, biocompatibility, stem cell issues, neurophysiology, and reproductive medicine.

Research into infectious diseases at the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Pilsen is among the highest rated in the Czech Republic, as evidenced by the number of publications in the most prestigious journals in the field. However, other scientific teams are not lagging behind in terms of results in the field of infectious diseases. A major success for the center was the acquisition and launch of the CHAPERON project as part of the European Horizon 2020 program (ERA Chair).

hanks to him, a new Laboratory of Translational Genomics of Cancer Diseases was launched in 2020 under the leadership of Prof. Kari Hemminki (formerly Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, Heidelberg). The center is also successful in protecting discoveries through patents, has initial experience with their commercialization, and works on contract research orders (annual volume of contract research orders: CZK 2 million).
